Children are captivated by everything that comes in the field of their experience. As I look at my tiny toddler looking at leaves, butterflies, bugs, trees, airplanes, roadrollers, the moon, stars, clouds, vegetables and even random empty boxes, I realise there is so much I have become blind to. His senses effortlessly gather all the pieces of newfound information. With pure focus and curiosity he zooms in a map of the world into his awareness. The world, which for him is ever so exciting and ever so novel. All the while his heart is ready for further exploration into territories unknown. I see a predisposition of a multitude of strengths like a curiosity, appreciation of beauty around and love of learning. His curiosity blends into awe, wonder and growth. It is effortless, it is spontaneous and for me it is poetry in action.

It is as if we are experiencing the gift of sight, smell, speech, touch, taste and hearing for the first time. Imagine if we knew it to be our first encounter with these intuitive sensibilities how profoundly different our experience would be. And naturally we all have had these experiences, just that they get lost in the rush of urgencies, covered under the debris of dreary routine. Eventually the novel becomes a part of the mundane. Living day in and out in a place diminishes the otherwise distinct characteristics of tradition, religion, language, philosophy, values and thereby overall culture. It becomes so much part and parcel of ones everyday routine that it enters into an arena of blinded awareness. It is part of us and our lives, yet we remain oblivious to it. We start taking it for granted.

So as I usher in the new year, inspired by my son, I say to myself, remember to nurture the child within, even though you may be all grown up now. Remember to be a tourist even though you may be in your own city. Remember to stop, smile and smell the rose, even though the thorns exist. Remember to enjoy the canopy which the trees make more so as the walk ahead is long. Remember to follow the beautiful butterfly even though you choose not to catch it. Remember to see the waves come in and out even though there may be dark clouds or the penetrating sun hovering above. Remember to kiss goodnight even though tiredness may stop you from doing so. Remember to feel gratitude, more so when the going gets tough. Remember to have the faith especially when fear clambers on. Most of all remember to find those moments in life that make it worth living and then live life to the fullest!

Wishing you all a fulfilling 2020!
